ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard assisted North Lincoln, Ore., Fire/Rescue with the rescue of five people and one dog from an 18-foot pontoon boat grounded at Siletz Bay, Ore., Monday.

The people aboard the boat contacted the North Lincoln Fire/Rescue Sunday after their vessel ran aground in a shallow area, but opted to stay overnight hoping the eventual high tide would free them. When the tide failed to free the vessel, the fire/rescue team and a 25-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay, Ore., attempted to retrieve the boaters by transporting them via jet ski to the waiting Coast Guard response boat. When this attempt failed, a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Facility Newport, Ore., was dispatched to hoist the passengers from the pontoon boat.

There were no injuries reported.

ASTORIA, Ore. — A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., rescued both a Cannon Beach, Ore., Fire/Rescue team member from a rip current at Cannon Beach and a 16-year-old girl from a cliff at Cascade Head near Tillamook Bay, Ore., in two separate cases Wednesday.

The helicopter crew was conducting training with Cannon Beach Fire/Rescue when a female rescue team member slipped from her jet ski into a rip current, which began to carry her toward some rocks. A Coast Guard rescue swimmer was deployed from the helicopter and managed to help the woman into a rescue basket, which was then hoisted into the helicopter. The helicopter crew had only just taken the rescue team member to shore when Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay received a report from local 911 that a 16-year-old girl was trapped on a cliff at Cascade Head.

The helicopter crew was diverted to Cascade Head where their swimmer was deployed to rescue the girl from the cliff. The girl was taken to the nearby beach where she was examined by Tillamook County Fire/Rescue workers for injuries.
